Organic bronze label to Zleep Hotels

October 9th, 2017

The hotel chain Zleep Hotels has been rewarded for its continuous work to maintain a sustainable and organic profile. This happened when the hotels received the bronze label from The Organic Cuisine Label, which is given to kitchens that serve between 30-60% organic produce.

Denmark. Organic world champions

The markets are developing, consumers are becoming smarter, and the entire population is increasingly interested in buying more organic products. This is especially clear in Denmark where the sales of organic products have grown steadily in the past 10 years. In the first half year of 2017 alone, the sales of organic produce grew by 12% in Denmark according to Organic Denmark, an association that essentially represent the entire organic food industry in Denmark.

Organic food for everyone

Zleep Hotels has been determined to become a more organic and sustainable business in previous years. It is Zleep Hotels’ philosophy that organic products should not only be available for guests at exclusive hotels: “That we are receiving the bronze label is proof that organic food is for everyone, and that an organic profile isn’t synonymous with high prices. Our new initiatives support our values and ensure that we can make organic food available to many more,” says Per Denker Sørensen, COO of Zleep Hotels.

The goal to primarily be using organic products is most obvious in the hotels’ breakfast buffet where all dairy products, bread, and processed food are organic. The organic level at the hotels is on average at 52%, which is in the high end of the bronze label’s margin of 30-60%.

Holistic approach to sustainability

When new hotels are being built and existing renovated, sustainable building processes and materials are highly prioritized. Zleep Hotels is constantly looking for new and better solutions that can improve its sustainability initiatives. Organic produce is just one of the focus areas that the chain of hotels has chosen to improve.

Zleep Hotels has always focused on reducing food waste, and today it only throws away tiny proportions of its stock. This is due to, among other things, use of purchasing management, smaller plates, and longer shelf life because of individually packaged products. Individual packaging reduces food waste and improves hygiene while it, contrary to most prejudices, has a low impact on the environment: Samvirke, a Danish consumer magazine, states that 69% of the environmental impact is caused by the production of food; 30% comes from transportation, processing, and cooling at the production sites; and just 1% of foodstuff’s environmental impact is attributed packaging.
